Since they'll be two class planes, you're looking for NF inventory. And my own experience has been that NF is not all that difficult to get with advance bookings. And if you're booking TOO FAR out before the inventory is released, you should certainly get the seats as a 1K.. just keep checking and don't count on the waitlist to process itself automatically for you.
Others may have had difficulties... but I even managed to secure (4) upgrade seats roundtrip last month. Sure, August may be easier than December, but I didn't even need THAT MUCH flexibility to get the 4 seats. (I could have had 2-3 seats on most flights/routes, but 4 did require some shifting around).
