Your initial read is correct - especially when it comes to Moloka'i.

I'll even stick my neck out and say that I wouldn't really recommend it for a family with a bunch of kids who love the beach. It's really not that kind of place (although very beautiful and worth seeing).

Lana'i, OTOH, is EXPENSIVE. The two main hotels on the island are Four Seasons, with all that that entail. The beach resort would probably be more appropriate for a family. The mountain resort, well, it's a great beautiful place, but when I was there, I had the distinct feeling that they cater to certain audience.

Of course, do a search here for more opinions on both islands.
