You are correct about Aeroplan being better than Air Miles. I needed to do YYZ-JFK which AC does not fly to, so I ended up booking using AA with Air Miles. Cost was 1050 Air Miles + $235 in taxes.
YYZ-LGA with Aeroplan would have cost 15K miles + $162 in taxes. (I just paid the same amount in taxes for YYZ-DFW redemption BTW. Not sure why the fuel surcharge would be the same for a 1 hr flight vs a 3 hr flight.)
Both are absurd.
Don't know how Air Miles would compare for an overseas flight.
