Sometimes hotel promotions tied to payment with Visa only. You certainly can pay with MC or AMEX for the same hotel stay, but you would not earn the particular promo. IC group has done such a lot, ditto Marriott. OTOH, Hyatt seems to tie its promo with MC. So I can see the poster's point of having an AA Visa if he also wants to earn miles via spending.
