I plan to stay in my hotel at night, including for dinner. I plan to not take public transpo, and I've hired a local female guide to hang out with.

Interested in hearing your experiences if you've been. I leave the US in 2 weeks.

Cheers.
Not the gender you were looking for but here is a little info.

What is the fun of going to Kathmandu if all you are going to do is stay and eat in your hotel room? I was in Kathmandu 7 or 8 years ago, I think it was supposed to be worse then, not sure - but I thought it was pretty safe in the Thamel area to walk around. Even Freak Street was safe - can't speak for now though! Your guide will have to be your "guide" as far as present day safety goes!

I think you will be able to get about in the early evening hours and do some wandering around during the day hours. I used the Khangsar Guest House back then. http://www.khangsarguesthouse.com/

Good luck.
