If I read your note correctly the city your landing in coming back from Europe is the one you want to end your trip. If so then your all set as when you fly into the US you have to get your baggage and clear customs even if your flying onto another city. Just don't recheck your bags and leave the airport - to the airline you simply missed your connection and found alternative transportation.
I've always been curious about this, too.
I don't understand the concept fully. I was always under the impression that you luggage is automatically checked through to the next destination. How can you get your luggage if you decided to not fly the last leg of your flight?
I always plan to fly mine...but just a curiosity. Who do you talk to or what do you do?
