This is true. The practice is known as jumpseating and would theoretically allow an airline pilot to live anywhere and commute to work. In practice, full flights and jumpseats between certain cities and limited flight schedules often make this more difficult than it sounds. Also, it adds stress because there is no guarantee of getting on a flight, thus many pilots try to avoid commuting when they can.
