Agree that the AA-JL connection is smooth in Tokyo. But I also believe that Star Alliance has made a ton of progress at PEK with connections in Terminal 3, including none of this insanity they used to have in Terminal 2 around being "herded" down into departures again. Terminal 3 UA-CA is at least in the same ballpark as AA-JL nowadays; I've done a few of those recently.

Air China in coach is kind of a train wreck; but their C/F domestic service is arguably better than United's equivalent domestic C/F onboard, simply because the flight attendants are living the life the UA FAs were living in 1975. (Warning: English speaking FAs may or may not be onboard -- but they'll try!)

The OP's question was UA or AA to PVG? Especially if you're on a newly configured 747, it's definitely UA.
