I don't think that the sentiment here is 'they should not be earning money' but more 'they should not try to take advantage of your situation and demand a full Y fare and "we can't use your ticket because you require a saturday stay"

on the few cases I read about in the newspapers here in Costa Rica of Americans sent back because of issues with their passports the airlines provided facilities for them to fly back to CR again once the problem was solved. (I think I read about two instances where this happened)
