While the other recomendations all have their merits, I twigged to your "runners & intramural sports" and thought... This guy ought to be looking at something in the neighborhoods around Griffith Park. The park has plenty of sports opportunities for those inclined: from miles of running, bike, and horse trails, tennis courts, soccer & rugby leagues, several golf courses, and facilities for other sports. Communities to look at include Los Feliz, West Glendale, North Hollywood, Universal City, etc. All of these would be within your prefered commute distance. Many have the possibility of using public transit to get to work. (check out www.metro.net)
