People who live near airports and train stations are quite sensitive to having "their" parking spaces taken over by rail/air travellers, and WILL resort to tactics such as reporting cars as abandoned. You're probably OK to leave your car in a residential area for a day or two. I wouldn't risk leaving it for more than that.
What you can do is e-mail the relevant council before you go. It's entirely possible that they will ignore it and go ahead with towing the car (although, assuming your car is taxed, I'd say it's bloody unlikely they'll move it within a month of you parking it there), but then you'll be able to point back to it and demand they release it back to you FOC.
