If the xrays are such poor quality, and the people are so poorly trained, then that's just another argument to get rid of the whole security circus all together.
Do you want the TSO at the xray screen to decide what is a real grenade and what is a fake one? Would you feel better if the TSO looked at the monitor and said to themselves "I don't think this is a real grenade..." and just let it pass?
It is not necessarily that the read out quality is "not that good", or maybe it is. Lead shows up as a black blob, the xrays can't penetrate it enough to show what may or may not be inside the black blob. A black blob in the shape of a grenade should not be ignored. We don't see a lot of "real" grenades passing thru the checkpoint, and TSO's are not the ones to decide what is real, and what is fake.
