What worked for me:

Get the ticket number, and save it until planning the new trip. AA saves it electronically, along with a record of any remaining value it has.

Then do as the above poster says-- reserve and hold the new trip on aa.com, then call reservations to have the remaining old ticket value applied to new ticket.

Done this way, I wasn't charged a telephone booking fee.
