Really depends on the route and time of travel. I had no problem booking a transcon via YVR three weeks ago in Classic, and then changing the return over the weekend with Classic space, all for travel late this month. Of course, SEs do have an advantage for Exec seats which are seldom available on high demand routes at the Classic level, but SEs cannot book such seating for others not traveling with them as liberally as in the past...surely SEs were not scamming the system?!
