First advice is to read the master sticky. You should book 2 one ways, rather than a return (cost is the same) and then you can do a stopover in each direction

I have read through the sticky but that doesn't answer my question.
I know if I did a flight to Perth via Sydney, or Auckland etc. I could do a stopover as it is in the same zone as Perth. But Singapore/Bangkok are not in the same zone but yet Star Alliance allows them to be valid routing points.
So the question remains can I do a stopover in either Singapore or Bangkok enroute to Perth, even though it is a different zone?
