Talking Card declined, Amex say it hadn't been activated!

Got myself an SPG Amex a month ago and have been putting a bit of spend on it. Today I paid for lunch with it then went to buy some groceries about ten minutes later and it was declined twice, a bit embarassed I use another card which worked fine.

I called Amex and they asked if it was a new card, saying it hadn't been activated yet!

Anyone else ever have this? Would be nice if they had no record of my $7k in transacations since I got it, maybe I should have claimed that
