Frequent Citi churners know well that they solve this by calling you. Every time I apply for another Citi card, they call me saying something like "we can only give you $2k of creidt on this new card because [you're maxed out with us]; would you like to transfer some credit from one of your existing cards to this new card"? And I am cancelling cards, but they never seem to automatically take more than $2k from previously cancelled cards to new cards, they instead automatically take credit from previously cancelled cards and apply them to old cards (so as to ensure that I'm "maxed out" on every credit app I make with them).

Sometimes they call before issuing the card, other times they call and say they've already sent out the card and that when I get it it won't yet reflect the new credit limit I just arranged on the phone.

(I haven't yet figured out a way to get them to not call. Unfortunately, there's no space for comments in Citi's online app to say something like "please move credit from my existing card ending in XXXX if you need to".)
