1. correct -- changing to stop over will change the fare rules, require a new ticket and most likely increase the cost
2. What hapeens if you "miss" your connection on a direct flight or even if it was a seperate flight -- the remaining part of your ticket will be cancelled and you will need to purchase a ticket home.

Sorry the agent was correct.
