My kind of woman!

I rarely shop when traveling. However, in India I wore off the rack (well, table) salwar kameez throughout the south while traveling with my Indian friend who had nicely tailored salwar and beautiful saris.

For me it was a comfort thing, and I was considering having a few outfits made. The women were obviously pleased that we chose to wear their style of clothing (although they were primarily in saris), which is considerably more modest than jeans and a tee-shirt. And more comfortable! In the south saris were more popular, but I preferred the salwar. To me it was a wearable outfit anywhere, and some were extremely stylish. (I think the scrunchy leg thing is a Pakistani or northern style) I drew the line at saris, because that seemed mocking, and I wasn't in to buying the whole top, sari and petticoat and keeping it all together.

We were invited to a Brahmin wedding in Madras and most of us wore our best western clothes. But my Indian friend borrowed from family and outfitted one of our young companions in a gorgeous sari, top and petticoat. She was greatly admired by the other guests and they were positively pleased that a westerner would make that effort.

Anyway, I visualized living in California in my carefully tailored salwar kameez with the fitted scrunchy legs and the huge one-size-fits all waist and the beautifully shaped salwar top. In California I wouldn't need the scarf my friend called a "goodie cover" but I could wear it with other outfits perhaps.

Mercifully, I didn't have time to get the clothes made. I am so thankful.
