Advice on Booking from SFO/LAX to Australia in March
There are lots of bits and pieces about this route scattered around FT, but I'm hoping someone who's familiar with this can summarize their experience for me.
I'd like to take my wife for a reasonably long (2 or 3 weeks) visit. I've only been once; she's never been. I'd like to travel in Business, not Coach. I'm 1K with lots of miles (although I don't want to waste them).
1) The preferred timeframe is the first 3 weeks of March, although there is some flexibility. Are there any significant dates around that time when fares/availabilty change?
2) It seems that the major options are:
2a) Buy coach tickets today and try to upgrade. It looks like I might be able to get them for around $1,400 US. Is this a good price? How hard is it to upgrade on this route?
2b) Wait a while, hoping for lower fares, then buy the tickets and try to upgrade.
2c) Book an award now. I experimented with a number of different dates, and it appears that there are no Business Saver awards available right now (lots of Coach Saver). So the cost would be 2x150,000 miles. Is this a good use of miles?
2d) Wait, hoping Business Saver awards become available. At 90,000 miles, is this a good use of miles? Are Business Saver awards likely to appear, or is that wishful thinking?
Any other strategies to recommend?
Thanks in advance.
