Careful on this..my buddy who owns his own company bought 3 seats for him and 2 colleagues. When one was a no show, AC sold the no show seat (it was a non refundable ticket) and filled it with someone waiting for a seat....so not sure this would work every time?
Your friend did not have the third boarding pass scanned at check in. Therefore the seat was a no show. If you paid for two seats and have both boarding passes scanned at the gate there is no way to have the 'extra' seat taken away.
