"Never depart late"? Now THAT is wishful thinking. I really doubt that UA even tries to prioritize these so-called "direct" flights that share a flight number with a connecting international flight.
I'd just take an earlier SFO-ORD flight - there are plenty of them all morning long, and whatever sleep you miss out on by catching the earlier flight will be made up in your seat in TATL C.
