For a while now (some time last year, IIRC) AA has
optionally during OLCI automatically moved people to the airport upgrade list, so there is no longer any need to request to be put on the list
at the airport. Also, your position on the airport list is based on the time you requested the upgrade. So if you request it when you book, you have a much better chance then if you wait until the airport. You'd think an EXP would know this by now, but obviously that guy didn't.
