I have never missed an upgrade coming or going to the caribbean. I really don't care if it clears 100 hours or 10 minutes before the flight. I also usually buy my ticket a couple of days before travel. To me, I count my blessings that the caribbean is considered to be domestic and hence I get "free" upgrades. As an EXP, don't sweat the 100 hour window.
