Just as an FYI to some of the prior posts, Lufthansa is publicly traded (just like US) and I don't believe the German gov't any longer subsidizes their operations (or holds shares). More information is available here:

Interestingly, you'll note that US nationals are their second biggest block of individual shareholders.
