Thought I would chime in to say TG is not the only Asian carrier that does this on award seats at check-in. MH is widely reported to be hitting up pax on award seats for "fuel surcharges," especially targeting Americans, especially inbound to KUL. The amounts seem arbitrary and vary wildly, but can come to several hundred dollars for premium cabin tix, payable on the spot or you don't fly. I was booking ST awards on the NW WorldPerks partner desk recently and heard a long warning about this MH practice (there's nothing the Stateside partners can do about it obviously), and some FTers have reported it too. It's a nasty surprise at check-in to have to pony up maybe $400 or $500 on a supposedly "free" ticket on which you've already paid perhaps $200 in taxes and fees.
If someone disputed the charges with AMEX or VISA, would they have a case?
