I've flown 3 roundtrips on AY HEL/HKG in the last 12 months and found them very decent. The seats on their A340 are much better than those on the MD11 - they are comfortable in the sitting position and good enough for sleeping. The food is okay, I like the hot soup but I think BA's entree is more edible. Some people have mentioned that the seafood special meal on AY is very good, so you may consider that if you like seafood.

The AY's flight attendants I had in year 2008 are much better than those I encountered pre-2008. They are attentive and patient, although one Chinese FA did not know what "brie" is. The toilets are kept clean all the time.

For the intra-Europe flights, (if on an Airbus) try to get seats on the AC side to avoid being stuck in the middle E seat. Food and service for intra-Europe flights are quite good as well, with frequent round of drinks.

In sum, my AY experience has been quite positive.
