Well I am wait-listed for SFO-EWR in November -- miles one way, e500s (of course since not till time window) but this is a 319 route.
I often fly this route and have found that it is much easier to upgrade using miles by avoiding the nonstop and instead flying SFO-ORD-EWR or SFO-DEN-EWR. In both cases the first segment is on 757, 767, or 777, which all have far more F (or C) class seats than 319. The second segment to EWR is currently on 320 which has 50% more F seats than the 319 for the nonstop.
I am 1MM 1P and have had 100% success on upgrading using miles this way over the last few years.
