The cables can be cut with the right tools, the hole where the lock goes into can be snapped with the right force, most mounting points for the loop in the cable aren't strong and you can snap/unscrew them etc.

They keep things secure, but aren't anything more than a small deterrent against someone who wants your laptop.

I often also lock my laptop in my suitcase. Keeps it hidden.
