Agreed - for the past 3 months I have been buying all my NA flights (yyz-ord, yyz-sfo, etc) on UA metal. They NEVER charge me a change fee at the airport to stand-by. I hear of other SE's who don't have to pay the $50 same-day change fee on AC... I am not one of them. I was at YYZ and a couple of weeks ago a lot earlier for my flight then planned. There was a direct flight to YSJ getting ready to leave in about 45 minutes. I asked if it was full and she said there were only 10 people on the flight... very light. I asked if I could get on and showed my SE card. She said "No problem at all... we will just need $50". Nice - they would rather let the plane leave 1/3 full then send an SE and get some good will. I can get over the crew in J, etc, etc... but this paying for stand-by really burns me. Continential, Delta, United, etc don't charge their top tier members for same-day stand-by.
