I have never been "carded" for age. (Ever. Anywhere. Even when I was 16. I'm 6'2" in the old Imperial measurements.) I have been asked for ID at hotels and shops because some merchants in the US are too stupid to understand what signatures and PINs are for. My point was that international travellers shouldn't need to carry their passports on them all the time. It's an unnecessary risk and we don't have a little card version we can just slip in our wallets.
