It's possible the UA code within Europe is pushing the whole thing up.

Try pricing a UA RT to/from LHR (or other gateway) only and see if you like what you get.

If so, price a one-way CDG-LHR (or other gateway) and see what you get (on a proper carrier: BA/AF/etc.) -- should be about $100.

If this is satisfactory, call UA and have them build that with the UA flights to/from LHR, and the AF/BA/whatever flight you pick.
