Airlines' Mileage Plan Changes Unfair
South Korea's Fair Trade Commission ordered Korean Air Co. (Q.KAL) and Asiana Airlines Inc. not to apply changes in their frequent flier mileage program retroactively, the corporate watchdog said Thursday.
South Korea's airlines have said they will change their frequent-flier mileage programs - mostly by raising the mileage-point requirements for benefits such as bonus tickets and seat upgrades - in a bid to reduce accumulating mileage-point debt.
They said the new regulations will take effect later this year or early next year and will apply to all outstanding mileage, although there will be a six- month grace period during which customers can use their mileage according to the original policy before the revised rules take effect.
