Things must be really bad for US on the cost side. One of the pillars of airline management and finance was that you make money by putting and keeping planes on the air. Planes on the ground lose dollars for every minute that they're on the ground. As a result, airlines LOVED red-eye flights as it allowed an airline to operate flights on a near 24 hour basis by taking advantage of the night hours and time changes to move aircraft east for the morning east-coast banks.
By stating that its not even profitable enough to operate red-eye flights or that there is not enough marginal revenue to run red-eyes, things can't be good.
