Slightly off topic....don't try that with RyanAir. I was in the exit row and was required to place my sweater in the overhead. The FA stood by the exit rows and made sure that everyone complied with her requests to stow all of their items overhead.
Tiger Airways (SQ LCC out of Singapore) is ridiculously strict as well -- nothing under the seat in front of the EXIT row (not even bulkhead), and NO blackberries in-flight, even if the signal is turned off.
