This has been happening for a few weeks now and the reason is there have been a spate of accidents involving large suitcases falling back down the escalator and knocking over passengers and/or staff and causing injuries, some of which have been serious.
I hear there was recently an accident at T5, coming up from the transit, where the person let go of their suitcase and it fell back down the escalator, seriously injurying someone.
Except the person with the case was a BA crewmember. Oops.
