I think the confusion is that when a Platinum elite redeems miles out of his/her account for non-elite travelers, the reservation and ticketing process is treated as if the non-elite traveler has the status of the account from which the miles are withdrawn. So close-in booking fees, award redeposit/change fees, fare class restrictions on domestic mileage upgrades, etc. are all subject to Platinum (or whatever level) rules.

When the non-elite traveler is actually traveling, it seems the Platinum benefits, such as elite access priority boarding, waived baggage fees, etc., no longer apply.
