To the OP: You can reserve an award reservation without having all of the points at the time of reservation. The reservation must be made with an agent, and you should ask that the award certificate not be ordered at the time of the reservation. You have until 7 days before the day of arrival to earn enough points to cover the award certificate.
If you book the award more than 7 days in advance no agent is necessary. Not sure about awards booked less than 7 days.
