Smile Award Miles on Air India

Hi,

This is my first post and have spendt hours reading the various informative resources posted here. I have been looking for an answer to a query and have yet to find it (that could also be because I am looking at the wrong place!). So hope can get the answer from the forumers here.

I am based in Houston and am a member of FB and M&M. I am planning to book a business class flight from LAX – KUL in Dec (return in Jan). The cheapest and preferred option I found is on an Air India (AI) ticket ($ 4,088) but operated by Malaysia Airlines (MH).

AI is not a FB nor Skyteam partner but MH is a FB partner. I would like to know if I can claim FB award miles on this flight ? The information from the KLM website (below) doesn’t mention about this scenario

"Flying Blue offers you Miles for every flight with one of our airline partners and for transactions with our non-airline partners. When flying with AIR FRANCE, KLM, Kenya Airways, Air Europa or other SkyTeam partners, every mile flown is generally rewarded with one Award Mile and one Level Mile. If you choose to fly with one of our other airline partners, every mile flown is generally rewarded with one Award Mile."

My interpretation of the above is that I cant claim award miles since the ticket is not issued by an airline partner. So to confirm, I called the FB customer service center and was rather surprised to be told that I could claim award miles on the above flight since it’s operated by an airline partner.

Any input from fellow FB-ers clarifying on the above will be much appreciated, since I don’t want to forgo the opportunity of earning 16,000 miles.

Thanks in advance.
