You speak like someone who pays for his own tickets.
What you are missing is that many people get
others (their company or their customer) to pay the cost of the flight, so the fact that Lattitude is twice the price is totally irrelevant to them. All they know is that there is a reasonably good likelihood of being upgraded. Mind you,
some people paying out of their own pocket also make the same value calculation and decide it is worth the extra cost.
