Status Miles count towards the year you flew them. If you are going to do an "extra" 5,000 miles, it means you will get two more SWU for hitting 40,000. On Jan 1 you need to stat all over again from zero.

Keep in mind that if you don't hit 35,000 by some time in early October, you likely won't get status until 2009.
