This is the best advice. While frustrating you can't see the seats before purchasing, that is a discussion for another day. To resolve this issue for your upcoming flight, call UA and say you're thinking about purchasing E+ but first want to know if you can get an aisle (or whatever you specifically want) and have them confirm.

If one does the purchase online @
www.united.com, before one confirms the ticket purchase, you are given an opportunity to purchase E+ (if available) and to see available seats --- all this before you confirm the purchase. This gives you the option of deciding in advance. BTW, the phone agents should be able to do the same.
