Boarding Group A

Hi, I have a question maybe someone can answer for me regarding Southwest's new boarding procedures, specifically getting the coveted Boarding Group A.

I checked in right at 12 Noon for a flight from TPA to FLL, which departs at 12 Noon. As we fellow Southwest travelers know, you can check in for your flight 24 hours in advance. I was hoping to get into the Boarding Group A but I was shocked when I found out that I was in Boarding Group B and position number 63 - right when I checked in at precisely 12 Noon, the start of the 24 hour check in window!

I know that Business Select customers get the first grab at the coveted Boarding Group A as part of the new boarding procedures. So, I decided to upgrade to a Business Select fare and - when I checked in again - I somehow got into Boarding Group A and position number 1!

So, my question is, if one were to purchase any of Southwest's discounted fares and check in for the flight right at the start of the 24-hour check in window would that increase the chances of getting the coveted Boarding Group A? And for some unknown reason why would I end up in Boarding Group B when I originally checked in right at the start of the 24-hour check in window?
