What type of trip insurance are you looking for? It's my understanding that the only free insurance with the Plat card is the accident insurance discussed above - which isn't really too helpful in most cases. By that I mean, if your cruise ship sinks and you drown or your flight crashes and you burn to death, you're not going to be worried about the $100,000 insurance payout.

If you're looking for travel insurance of the luggage/delay/medical/dental type, Amex offers some on a per trip basis. You call them to activate the feature and every time you charge a ticket to your card, they charge the insurance amount as well. Since the benefits appear to be pretty good, I inquired about this insurance for a RTW award ticket but was told miles tickets would not be eligible. So, my understanding is that a miles ticket would not be covered. Even if charging the taxes and fees would incur the insurance charge, I'm not sure I'd want to risk being denied benefits down the line. What I did was use Global Travel Shield, which is also an Amex product and reasonably priced.
