How reliable is the floating exit row on the 737-900?

So, normally rows 14 and 16 are blocked because they don't know which version will fly on which route, etc.

I have seats in row 15, but today my Saturday morning flight on the 739 opened up row 16 as the other exit row. When I try to change to row 16, the seats don't stick.

Question 1: Has anyone else experienced not being able to assign these seats when they become available?

Question 2: Now that they have decided which version to fly 48 hours in advance, what is the likelyhood that it will remain the same version? I don't want to change to row 16 then find myself in a regular seat.

Any experiences to share?
