Why Doesn't MR Allow Spouses/Partners to Share Accounts?

My model for this is the HHonors "Mutual Fund", whereby my wife and I share an account number and either of us can stay with it, earning points and elite credits.

If Marriott allowed this, they would certainly have gotten 36 more nights of business from us this year (which is what we've spent in Hiltons to just barely cross the gold threshold). What's the rationale for forcing couples to maintain separate accounts?
