Yes you can earn and burn, only you can't be sure both BMI and LH has awards available on the same flight. But if they have, you can do that.

I have one trip in mind where it may make more sense for us to redeem miles/cash for the adult tickets, but to buy a child seat and accumulate miles... not sure if this would work, though.
