Yes you can... When you call, just let them know that PVG is your final destination and you want to make NRT your stopover point. You'll have mulitple options of getting to PVG via NRT.

remember.. NH 7028 and 7029 are operated by UA.
You can do IAD-NRT-PVG-NRT-IAD UA/NH

or use any one of the western gateways to get in to NRT. From NRT, you shouldn't have a lot of problems getting to PVG. You can use NH, or even OZ via ICN. or even Shanghai Airlines... (not sure if they're fully setup with *A)

You can do one stopover or one open jaw... You'll need to dedicate some time with the agent.. and have her check all possible connections. She might even have to break the itinerary apart and search for it segment by segment. i.e. IAD-ORD , ORD-NRT , NRT-ICN , ICN-PVG , PVG-NRT , NRT- LAX, LAX-IAD.
