With status, you can see and select seats at any time after booking via Manage My Booking (MMB). Without status, you can only see and and select seats if you are in First or holding a fully flexible ticket in any class.

It is highly unlikely (99% certain) that your spouse will not be upgraded, especially without status. You can buy an onboard upgrade from CW to F if there is a free seat/spare meal for £750 by speaking to the CSD, although this is discouraged by BA and is actually not very good value for money.
