The key is access at NRT, since he will be getting off after a long flight and could use a shower. It sounds like from the wording of the oneworld policy, he will have NRT oneworld lounge access, before onward coach NRT-BKK. This is good to know.

It depends. Lounge access is not available with "stopovers." But for most international fares, a "stopover" is defined as more than 24 hours. So...if he is spending the night but is in Los Angeles for a total of fewer than 24 hours, it technically wouldn't count as a "stopover" and he would still be considered "connecting" from International Business Class.
Now, whether you could convince a lounge rep of this fact is another matter. But I've had success doing so at the AA First Class lounge.
